Notes from the President
May 15, 2012
Sadly, I must open this update, with the news of the passing of two members of the 90th. On the 26th of February, T/4 Julius "Duke" Yuhasz, HHB 343FA passed away two week short of his 96th birthday. His obituary will be in the Fall issue of the Newsletter. I never met him, but we did correspond over the past four years, his daughter indicated they would like to attend the reunion in his memory, and I hope they are able. Just this past week, we also lost another member, Captain Claude Lovett. Claude was the Lt in charge of the platoon which rescued Jim Flowers and the few remaining members of Jim's Tank Platoon at the base of Hill 122. Claude and his wife Helen have attended many reunions, and he was a true hero. His obituary is on line at http://www.legacy.com/link.asp?i=ls000157539679
By now you all should have received your copy of the newsletter with the Reunion information. I just wanted to update you with a few more details:
Dr. David Frey just received a Fulbright scholarship, so he will be sending the Acting Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, LTC Raymond Hrinko, who recently was assigned to AFRICOM working to prevent atrocities in Libya. Both Dt Terry and David Yeger will be in attendance, along with Joreg Skriebeliet, who runs the Flossenberg museum. I have learn that another inmate of Flossenberg lives in Dallas and I will be inviting him to attend.
We have asked Tristan Rondeau to speak about the Falaise Gap and his interest in the 90th Inf Division. There will be a presentation by Bruno Ehlich, if he is able to make the reunion, if not Past President Vernon Schmidt will step in. COL Hammons, the new Commander of the 90th Sustainment Bde, will bring us up to date on the activities of the Bde.
In the Newsletter, there was a letter from Robert Ditmore who recently wrote a paper on the 90th ID. His Great Uncle was in the 344th FA, Robert is planning on attending and will be thanking all those members who helped him with the research. I also noticed that several family members were planning on attending in honor of grandfathers and fathers, so we should have many "first Timers".
I am still accepting pictures of monuments, so please keep them coming.! For those of you taking a trip to France and Germany this June, please bring back photo's to share.
See you all in Fort Worth.
