CHAPTER XI
... AND AGAIN THE MOSELLE

March of '45 came with a splash of rain, but nevertheless the troops made the most of their opportunity for rest and rehabilitation. On March 2nd Brigadier General Herbert L. Earnest assumed command of the Division, and on the same day the 90th received warning orders.

In the north the American First and Ninth Armies and the British had launched a powerful drive which was carrying them to the Rhine River and the famous Remagen Bridge. Just to the south of VIII Corps zone the 4th Armored Division was preparing to drive through the Eifel Hills, also to the Rhine. The mission of the 90th was to move through the advancing 6th Armored and seize a crossing over the Kyll River, where, intelligence reports revealed, the enemy was digging in and planning to hold whatever the cost.
